Safe Housing Abroad

While most 花影直播 students who travel abroad do not need to arrange accommodations themselves, some students—especially those traveling independently or in small groups—may need to secure their own housing.

 Before You Travel

  • Evaluate Safety: Before booking, read at least a dozen recent guest reviews to identify any red flags or concerning trends. Choose reputable providers with a resolution service, and prioritize properties with top ratings or “superhost” status, which indicates experienced hosts with high hospitality standards. Avoid accommodations where you must share space with strangers. Always communicate through the platform’s website or app to ensure message traceability. Keep in mind that personal residences may not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Upon arrival, conduct a safety walk-through to check for risks such as missing fire extinguishers.

  • Hotel Reviews: Read reviews on sites like TripAdvisor for security information, using they keyword search function with “safety” or “security.”

While Abroad

  • Neighborhood Safety: Assess the general safety and security of the neighborhood. Learn what the area is like during both day and night. Avoid “no-go” areas.

  • Room Layout: Check for high, stable railings on balconies, lockable doors, posted evacuation plans, and multiple exits. Ensure the presence of smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, and automatic fire sprinklers. Know the location of the nearest fire department.

  • Homestays: Understand how host families are selected and vetted. Confirm whether you can switch homestays if needed. Find out how many other guests are staying and whether you will have a separate room and bathroom.

  • Logistics: Determine the distance to campus, classes, or your conference. Check the proximity to grocery stores and other amenities. Plan your transportation to and from the residence.

  • On-Site Issues: Know the protocols for reporting problems. Find out if there is a 24/7 emergency phone number.

  • Building Access & Security Measures: Check for locks, deadbolts, and personal safes for secure storage. For first-floor rooms, look for window bars or safety gates. Assess lighting outside the building, in the lobby, stairwells, and hallways. Look for CCTV cameras and whether they are actively monitored.

After Your Trip

  • Review Your Stay: Provide feedback on your accommodation to help future travelers.
  • Report Issues: If you encountered any problems, report them to the provider.
  • Reflect on Experience: Consider what worked well and what could be improved for future trips.
